<p><strong>How does it work?</strong><br />
When creating an archive in WinRAR or any other program, you can select only 1 compression algorithm for all files added at a time. Although the program provides several of them. Different algorithms are more effective for different types of files. For example, texts are better compressed using PPMD, but binary files are EXE-compression, uncompressed audio files (wav) or images (bmp) need a DELTA filter, and so on.</p>
<p><strong>Ultra RAR Optimizer</strong> repacks such an archive using all possible compression algorithms, trying (sorting) different algorithms for each file type (there is a selection by file extension). At the end, it creates the smallest possible archive size (i.e. it optimizes the original archive, the content does not change!). More than 19 variants of compression! Also Optimizer compares RAR4 and RAR5/RAR7 and selects the best variant. This is why it is quite a long process (several times longer than simply creating an archive), but it will not affect the speed of unpacking the archive, it will still be very fast. The compression gain can be up to 10-20% for certain types of files! If the optimized archive is the same size as the original one or larger, the program will leave the original archive unchanged, i.e. you will not lose anything in size in any case.</p>
<p>For daily use, I recommend the &#8220;Normal&#8221; mode, it is fast enough and gives good results. For better compression, use the &#8220;good&#8221; or &#8220;best&#8221; modes. And if you are ready to wait longer, then &#8220;ultra&#8221;. The &#8220;Extreme&#8221; and &#8220;Extreme2&#8221; modes can be selected if the archive size is small enough (up to 10-50 MB), or if you want to get maximum compression despite a fairly long repacking process. If you have more than 4 GB of RAM, you can increase the size of the dictionary to 512 MB and higher, which can further improve compression.</p>

<p>UPX achieves an excellent compression ratio and offers very fast decompression. Your executables suffer no memory overhead or other drawbacks for most of the formats supported, because of in-place decompression. UPX uses a data compression algorithm called UCL, which is an open-source implementation of portions of the proprietary NRV (Not Really Vanished) algorithm. UCL has been designed to be simple enough that a decompressor can be implemented in just a few hundred bytes of code. UCL requires no additional memory to be allocated for decompression, a considerable advantage that means that a UPX packed executable usually requires no additional memory. UPX also can use LZMA.</p>
<p>UPX can compress all executables, be it AOUT, ELF, libc4, libc5, libc6, Shell/Perl/Python scripts, standalone Java .classm, binaries, or whatever. All scripts and programs will work just as before. Compressed programs are completely self-contained. No need for any external program.</p>
<p>Unpacking mechanism.<br />
A simple routine stub code is embedded into the now packed binary, that also acts as the entry point. As it starts running, it will allocate a new memory region in which it unpacks the original code. Then the program code jumps to the Original Entry Point (OEP) and continues with the execution of the original, unpacked program.</p>
<p><strong>How does it work (UPX Optimizer)?</strong><br />
Different parameters of the LZMA algorithm give different compression ratios. Ultra7z EXE/DLL Compressor iterates through several such parameters and selects the best result. The time is a little longer, but the compression will be better. Even compared to the ultra-brute mode. It has 5 levels of optimization for LZMA.</p>

<p>AV1 was developed as a successor to VP9 by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), a consortium founded in 2015 that includes semiconductor firms, video on demand providers, video content producers, software development companies and web browser vendors. The AV1 bitstream specification includes a reference video codec. In 2018 Facebook conducted testing that approximates real world conditions, the AV1 reference encoder achieved 34%, 46.2% and 50.3% higher data compression than libvpx-vp9, x264 high profile, and x264 main profile respectively. Like VP9, but unlike H.264/AVC and HEVC, AV1 has a royalty-free licensing model that does not hinder adoption in open-source projects.</p>
<p>It was developed by the Alliance for Open Media, which counts Amazon, Apple, ARM, Facebook, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, Nvidia and Samsung among its members, and is designed to offer internet streaming efficiency upgrades without affecting quality. That makes it an important step in the uptake of streamed 8K video, given the more data-heavy demands of this higher-res format.</p>

<p>AV1 is a traditional block-based frequency transform format featuring new techniques. Based on Google&#8217;s VP9, AV1 incorporates additional techniques that mainly give encoders more coding options to enable better adaptation to different types of input.</p>
<p>Frame content is separated into adjacent same-sized blocks referred to as superblocks. Similar to the concept of a macroblock, superblocks are square-shaped and can either be of size 128×128 or 64×64 pixels. Superblocks can be divided in smaller blocks according to different partitioning patterns. The four-way split pattern is the only pattern whose partitions can be recursively subdivided. This allows superblocks to be divided into partitions as small as 4×4 pixels. &#8220;T-shaped&#8221; partitioning patterns are introduced, a feature developed for VP10, as well as horizontal or vertical splits into four stripes of 4:1 and 1:4 aspect ratio. The available partitioning patterns vary according to the block size, both 128×128 and 8×8 blocks can&#8217;t use 4:1 and 1:4 splits. Moreover, 8×8 blocks can&#8217;t use &#8220;T&#8221; shaped splits. Two separate predictions can now be used on spatially different parts of a block using a smooth, oblique transition line (wedge-partitioned prediction). This enables more accurate separation of objects without the traditional staircase lines along the boundaries of square blocks. More encoder parallelism is possible thanks to configurable prediction dependency between tile rows (ext_tile).</p>
<p>AV1 performs internal processing in higher precision (10 or 12 bits per sample), which leads to compression improvement due to smaller rounding errors in reference imagery. Predictions can be combined in more advanced ways (than a uniform average) in a block (compound prediction), including smooth and sharp transition gradients in different directions (wedge-partitioned prediction) as well as implicit masks that are based on the difference between the two predictors. This allows combination of either two inter predictions or an inter and an intra prediction to be used in the same block.</p>
<p>AV1 has new optimized quantization matrices (aom_qm).</p>

<p>AV1 is an open, royalty-free video standard with an improved compression system that should allow huge data efficiency savings without reducing video quality – and that could be key going forward into a world of higher frame rates, 8K resolution, HDR standards and audio demands. As such, AV1 brings implications for those who use services such as Netflix, Disney Plus and Prime Video; people looking to buy a new TV or media streamer; and anyone interested in 8K TV. And as a catch-all compression standard there are many uses beyond, including gaming, realtime applications such as video conferencing and anything else where video streams are required.</p>
<p>If you want a cutting edge, next generation codec and are limited by licensing and bandwidth costs, AV1 is the way to go for you. On the other hand, if you want to support the most available (resource limited/ mobile) devices or have a need for real-time, low latency encoding, it would be better to stick to H.265(HEVC) for the time being.</p>

<p><strong>How does it work?</strong><br />
When creating an archive in 7-zip or any other program, you can select only 1 compression algorithm for all files added at a time. Although the program provides several of them. Different algorithms are more effective for different types of files. For example, texts are better compressed using PPMD, but binary files are LZMA, uncompressed audio files (wav) or images (bmp) need a DELTA filter, and so on.</p>
<p><strong>Ultra7z Optimizer</strong> repacks such an archive using all possible compression algorithms, trying (sorting) different algorithms for each file type (there is a selection by file extension). At the end, it creates the smallest possible archive size (i.e. it optimizes the original archive, the content does not change!). This is why it is quite a long process (several times longer than simply creating an archive), but it will not affect the speed of unpacking the archive, it will still be very fast (unlike other superarchivers like PAQ, where you have to wait for hours to unpack, here it takes only a few seconds or even less). The compression gain can be up to 10-20% for certain types of files! If the optimized archive is the same size as the original one or larger, the program will leave the original archive unchanged, i.e. you will not lose anything in size in any case.</p>
<p>Thus, the program can also be used as a regular Converter from various types of archives (zip, rar, etc.) to 7z archives.</p>

<p>For daily use, I recommend the &#8220;Normal&#8221; mode, it is fast enough and gives good results. For better compression, use the &#8220;good&#8221; or &#8220;best&#8221; modes. And if you are ready to wait longer, then &#8220;ultra&#8221;. The &#8220;Extreme&#8221; and &#8220;Extreme2&#8221; modes can be selected if the archive size is small enough (up to 10-50 MB), or if you want to get maximum compression despite a fairly long repacking process. If you have more than 4 GB of RAM, you can increase the size of the LZMA dictionary to 256 MB and PPMD to 1024 MB, which can further improve compression. Also, a small improvement usually gives an increase of the parameter &#8220;LZMA word Size&#8221; to 273.</p>
<p>The main difference between Ultra7z Optimizer and other similar repackaging programs is that it works much faster, because it does not go through all the compression options (and there are more than 400 of them), and tries only the main ones (giving the greatest gain), without chasing hundreds of percent.</p>

<p>How does it work?<br />
The Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a format for storing compressed raster graphics. The compression engine is based on the Deflate method. Unlike other lossless compression schemes, PNG compression does not depend solely on the statistics of the input, but it may vary within wide limits, depending on the compressor&#8217;s implementation. A good PNG encoder must be able to take informed decisions about the factors that affect the size of the output. The purpose of this article is to provide information about these factors, and to give advice on implementing efficient PNG encoders.</p>
<p>The PNG compression works in a pipeline manner.<br />
In the first stage, the image pixels are passed through a lossless arithmetic transformation named delta filtering, or simply filtering, and sent further as a (filtered) byte sequence. Filtering does not compress or otherwise reduce the size of the data, but it makes the data more compressible.</p>
<p>In the second stage, the filtered byte sequence is passed through the Ziv-Lempel algorithm (LZ77), producing LZ77 codes that are further compressed by the Huffman algorithm in the third and final stage. The combination of the last two stages is referred to as the Deflate compression, a widely-used, patent-free algorithm for universal, lossless data compression. The maximum size of the LZ77 sliding window in Deflate is 32768 bytes, and the LZ77 matches can be between 3 and 258 bytes long.</p>
<p>The good encoders are at least applying the filtering heuristics.</p>

<p>Zopfli Compression Algorithm is a compression library programmed in C to perform very good, but slow, deflate or zlib compression. Zopfli Compression Algorithm was created by Lode Vandevenne and Jyrki Alakuijala, based on an algorithm by Jyrki Alakuijala.</p>
<p>There are a number of factors that affect the size of PNG image files, such as the number of colors in the image and whether the image data is stored as RGBA data or in the form of references to a color palette. The main factor is the quality of the Deflate compression used to compress the image data, which is in turn affected by the quality of the compressor and how well the data to be compressed is arranged.</p>
<p>The PNG format supports a number of scanline filters that transform the image data by relating nearby pixels mathematically. Choosing the right filters for each scanline can make the image data more compressible. It is, however, infeasible for non-trivial images to find the best filters so typical encoders rely on a couple of heuristics to find good filters.</p>
<p>PNGWolf employs a genetic algorithm to find better filter combinations than traditional heuristics. It derives a couple of filter combinations heuristically, adds a couple of random combinations, and then looks how well each combination compresses. Two very different combinations may compress similarily well, for instance, one combination may be very good for the first couple of scanlines, while the other may be very good for the last couple of scanlines. So taking the beginning of one combination and the tail of the other to make a new one may result in a combination that compresses better then the original two.</p>

<p>AVIF &#8211; a modern image format based on the AV1 video format, ROYALTY-FREE, interoperable and open. AVIF is a combination of the HEIF ISO standard, and a royalty-free AV1 codec by Mozilla, Xiph, Google, Cisco, and many others.</p>
<p>AV1 Image File Format supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut (WCG) images as well as Standard Dynamic Range (SDR). It supports monochrome images as well as multi-channel images with all the bit depths and color spaces specified in AV1. Also supports multi-layer images to be stored both in image items and image sequences.</p>
<p>It competes with HEIC which uses the same container format, build upon ISOBMFF, but HEVC for compression. Version 1.0 of the AVIF specification was finalized in February 2019.</p>
<p>It compresses images significantly better than older-generation formats such as WebP and JPEG. It&#8217;s supported in Chrome desktop today, and support is coming to other Chromium-based browsers, as well as Firefox. More than a half of an average website&#8217;s bandwidth is spent on images. Improved image compression can save bandwidth and improve overall performance of the web.</p>

<p>AVIF is natively supported in Google Chrome and by many other tools and software libraries. Developers have also added support to a variety of image editing tools.</p>
<p>On 14 December 2018 Netflix published the first .avif sample images, and support was added in VLC. Microsoft announced support with the Windows 10 &#8220;19H1&#8221; preview release, including support in File Explorer, Paint and multiple APIs, together with sample images. Paint.net added support for opening AVIF files in September 2019 and the ability to save AVIF format images in an August 2020 update. GIMP plugin implementation has been developed supporting both 3.x and 2.10.x plugin APIs. Native AVIF import and export was added to GIMP in October 2020.</p>
<p>In August 2020, Google Chrome version 85 was released with full AVIF support. Mozilla is working on support for the image format in Firefox. Cloudflare announced AVIF support in a blog post on 3 October 2020.</p>
<p>One of the big things AVIF does is it fixes WebP&#8217;s biggest flaws. WebP is over 10 years old, and AVIF is a major upgrade over the WebP format. These two formats are technically related: they&#8217;re both based on a video codec from the VPx family. WebP uses the old VP8 version, while AVIF is based on AV1, which is the next generation after VP10.</p>
<p>WebP is limited to 8-bit color depth, and in its best-compressing mode of operation, it can only store color at half of the image&#8217;s resolution (known as chroma subsampling). This causes edges of saturated colors to be smudged or pixelated in WebP. AVIF supports 10- and 12-bit color at full resolution, and high dynamic range (HDR).</p>

<p>JPEG XL uses a novel internal color space (called XYB) for high-fidelity, perceptually optimized image encoding, but it can also handle the simple YCbCr color transformation applied by JPEG.</p>
<p>JPEG XL offers significantly better image quality and compression ratios than legacy JPEG, plus a shorter specification. It is designed for computationally efficient encoding and decoding using software implementations without the need for additional hardware acceleration, even on mobile devices.</p>
<p>The following people made key contributions to the JPEG XL project: Jon Sneyers, Jyrki Alakuijala, Lode Vandevenne, Luca Versari, Jan Wassenberg.</p>
<p>The JPEG Committee plans to submit the JPEG XL standard as a Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) in January 2021. If approved, ISO and IEC will publish it as an International Standard in July 2021.</p>

<p>Lossless WebP supports transparency (also known as alpha channel) at a cost of just 22% additional bytes. For cases when lossy RGB compression is acceptable, lossy WebP also supports transparency, typically providing 3× smaller file sizes compared to PNG.</p>
<p>Lossy WebP compression uses predictive coding to encode an image, the same method used by the VP8 video codec to compress keyframes in videos. Predictive coding uses the values in neighboring blocks of pixels to predict the values in a block, and then encodes only the difference.</p>
<p>Lossless WebP compression uses already seen image fragments in order to exactly reconstruct new pixels. It can also use a local palette if no interesting match is found.</p>
<p>WebP is natively supported in Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge, the Opera browser, and by many other tools and software libraries. Developers have also added support to a variety of image editing tools.</p>

<p>Cpdfsqueeze is a lossless compressor for PDF files, which works by rearranging and coalescing content within the file. Very fast!</p>
<p>Pdfsizeopt is a program for converting large PDF files to small ones. If the input PDF has many images or large images, pdfsizeopt can be very slow. Pdfsizeopt can use the following external tools to make images in embedded PDF files smaller: sam2p, jbig2, pngout.</p>
<p>Ghostscript is an interpreter for the PostScript language and PDF files. It has been under active development for over 30 years and has been ported to several different systems during this time. Ghostscript consists of a PostScript interpreter layer and a graphics library.</p>

<p>In &#8220;Good&#8221; mode program try choose the minimum frame size to fit the data and will also minimize the data size. This is completely lossless, and is equivalent to decompressing a ZIP file and recompressing with a more aggressive setting. In &#8220;Best&#8221; mode it attempts to minimize the data by doing a brute-force search for the optimal parameters, so it takes longer than it would normally.</p>
