Compress your EXE/DLL executable files in smaller size (up to 200-300%) for best disk perfomance! Program uses UPX for compression and tries many tuning parameters for a smaller size. Programs and libraries compressed by UPX are completely self-contained and run exactly as before, with no runtime or memory penalty for most of the supported formats. 5 levels of LZMA optimization. Batch processing of files (drag-n-drop). Reduce the size of your files in one click! Program optimizes your file to new one with «_optimized» name ending (source file will remain intact). Test after compression.

Features:
– Compression of executable files up to 200-300%!
– Fast and ultra (slow) modes.
– Supported formats: EXE, DLL, OCX, SYS, BPL, CPL, AX, ACM, DRV, TLB etc.
– Option “Preserve file attributes (time stamps, file access rights, etc.)”.
– You can set «Run in background (without console output)» or uncheck it for manual process control.
– Option “Exact (byte-identical decompression)”.
– Create backup file (.backup)
– Copy or strip/skip overlay.
– Excellent compression ratio: compresses better than zip/gzip.

How does it work (UPX)?
UPX is an advanced executable file compressor. UPX will typically reduce the file size of programs and DLLs by around 100%-200%, thus reducing disk space, network load times, download times and other distribution and storage costs.

UPX achieves an excellent compression ratio and offers very fast decompression. Your executables suffer no memory overhead or other drawbacks for most of the formats supported, because of in-place decompression. UPX uses a data compression algorithm called UCL, which is an open-source implementation of portions of the proprietary NRV (Not Really Vanished) algorithm. UCL has been designed to be simple enough that a decompressor can be implemented in just a few hundred bytes of code. UCL requires no additional memory to be allocated for decompression, a considerable advantage that means that a UPX packed executable usually requires no additional memory. UPX also can use LZMA.

UPX can compress all executables, be it AOUT, ELF, libc4, libc5, libc6, Shell/Perl/Python scripts, standalone Java .classm, binaries, or whatever. All scripts and programs will work just as before. Compressed programs are completely self-contained. No need for any external program.

Unpacking mechanism.
A simple routine stub code is embedded into the now packed binary, that also acts as the entry point. As it starts running, it will allocate a new memory region in which it unpacks the original code. Then the program code jumps to the Original Entry Point (OEP) and continues with the execution of the original, unpacked program.

How does it work (UPX Optimizer)?
Different parameters of the LZMA algorithm give different compression ratios. Ultra7z EXE/DLL Compressor iterates through several such parameters and selects the best result. The time is a little longer, but the compression will be better. Even compared to the ultra-brute mode. It has 5 levels of optimization for LZMA.

GUI and generator of the best compression parameters for perspective compressors: BSC and Kanzi. It uses all possible compression parameters and at the end it creates the smallest possible archive. BSC is a high performance file compressor based on lossless, block-sorting data compression algorithms. Multiple algorithms that allows software fine-tuning for maximum speed or compression efficiency. Kanzi is a modern, modular, portable and efficient lossless data compressor implemented in C++. Modern: state-of-the-art algorithms are implemented and multi-core CPUs can take advantage of the built-in multi-threading. Modular: entropy codec and a combination of transforms can be provided at runtime to best match the kind of data to compress. Unlike the most common lossless data compressors, Kanzi uses a variety of different compression algorithms and supports a wider range of compression ratios as a result. Most usual compressors do not take advantage of the many cores and threads available on modern CPUs. Kanzi is multithreaded by design and uses several threads by default to compress blocks concurrently.

Memory usage:
bsc compresses large files in blocks. Multiple blocks can be processed in parallel on multiple-core CPU. At decompression time, the block size used for compression is read from the header of the compressed file. The block size and number of blocks processed in parallel affects both the compression ratio achieved, and the amount of memory needed for compression and decompression. Compression and decompression requirements are the same and in bytes, can be estimated as 16Mb + 5 x block size x number of blocks processed in parallel.

GPU memory usage for NVIDIA CUDA technology is different from CPU memory usage and can be estimated as 20 x block size for ST, 21 x block size for forward BWT and 7 x block size for inverse BWT.

modern: state-of-the-art algorithms are implemented and multi-core CPUs can take advantage of the built-in multi-threading.
modular: entropy codec and a combination of transforms can be provided at runtime to best match the kind of data to compress.
portable: many OSes, compilers and C++ versions are supported (see below).
expandable: clean design with heavy use of interfaces as contracts makes integrating and expanding the code easy. No dependencies.
efficient: the code is optimized for efficiency (trade-off between compression ratio and speed).

Unlike the most common lossless data compressors, Kanzi uses a variety of different compression algorithms and supports a wider range of compression ratios as a result. Most usual compressors do not take advantage of the many cores and threads available on modern CPUs (what a waste!). Kanzi is multithreaded by design and uses several threads by default to compress blocks concurrently. It is not compatible with standard compression formats.

Kanzi is a lossless data compressor, not an archiver. It uses checksums (optional but recommended) to validate data integrity but does not have a mechanism for data recovery. It also lacks data deduplication across files. However, Kanzi generates a bitstream that is seekable (one or several consecutive blocks can be decompressed without the need for the whole bitstream to be decompressed).

There are a few scenarios where Kanzi could be a better choice:
gzip, lzma, brotli, zstd are all LZ based. It means that they can reach certain compression ratios only. Kanzi also makes use of BWT and CM which can compress beyond what LZ can do.

These LZ based compressors are well suited for software distribution (one compression / many decompressions) due to their fast decompression (but low compression speed at high compression ratios). There are other scenarios where compression speed is critical: when data is generated before being compressed and consumed (one compression / one decompression) or during backups (many compressions / one decompression).

Kanzi has built-in customized data transforms (multimedia, utf, text, dna, …) that can be chosen and combined at compression time to better compress specific kinds of data.

Kanzi can take advantage of the multiple cores of a modern CPU to improve performance

It is easy to implement a new transform or entropy codec to either test an idea or improve compression ratio on specific kinds of data.

The Block compressor cuts the input file into blocks (the size can be provided on the command line with the ‘block’ option up to 1GB). Optionally, a checksum for the chunk of data can be computed and stored in the output.

As a first step, it applies one or several transforms (default is BWT+MTFT+ZRLT) to turn the block into a smaller number of bytes. Up to 8 transforms can be provided. EG: BWT+RANK+ZRLT.

As a second step, entropy coding is performed (to turn the block into a smaller number of bits).

Available transforms:
BWT: Burrows Wheeler Transform (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burrows-Wheeler_transform) is a transform that reorders symbols in a (reversible) way that is more amenable to entropy coding. This implementation uses a linear time foward transform and parallel inverse tranform.
BWTS: Burrows Wheeler Transform by Scott is a bijective variant of the BWT (slower).
LZ: Lempel Ziv (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LZ77_and_LZ78). An implementation of the dictionary based LZ77 transform that removes redundancy in the data.
LZX: Lempel Ziv Extra. Same as above with a bigger hash table and/or extra match checks.
RLT: Run Length Transform (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run-length_encoding). A simple transform that replaces runs of similar symbols with a compact representation.
ZRLT: Zero Run Length Transform. Similar to RLT but only processes runs of 0. Usually used post BWT.
MTFT: Move-To-Front Transform (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Move-to-front_transform). A transform that reduces entropy by assigning shorter symbols to recent data (works like a LRU cache). Usually used post BWT.
RANK: Rank Transform: A transform that that reduces entropy by assigning shorter symbols based on symbol frequency ranks. Usually used post BWT.
EXE: A transform that reduces the entropy of executable files (X86 & ARM64) by replacing relative jump addresses with absolute ones.
TEXT: A text transform that uses a dictionary to replace common words with their index.
ROLZ: Reduced Offset Lempel Ziv. An implementation of LZ that replaces match offsets with indexes of match offsets. It yields a more compact output at the cost of an extra indirection (hence slower decoding speeds).
ROLZX: Extended ROLZ with more match searches and a more compact encoding.
SRT: Sorted Rank Transform: A transform that that reduces entropy by assigning shorter symbols based on symbol frequency ranks. Usually used post BWT.
LZP: Lempel Ziv Prediction can be described as an LZ implementation with only one possible match (hence the offset is not even emitted). It is pretty weak (but fast) and usually used prior to a BWT to remove some redundancy and speed up coding.
MM: Mutimedia transform is a fast transform that removes redundancy in correlated channels in some multimedia files (EG. wav, pnm).
UTF: a fast transform replacing UTF-8 codewords with aliases based on frequencies.
PACK: a fast transform replacing unused symbols with aliases based on frequencies.

Entropy codecs.
Several entropy codecs have been implemented (sorted by increasing compression):
Huffman: The codec is a fast canonical Huffman implementation. Both encoder and decoder use tables to compute code lengths and values instead of a tree (for speed purpose).
RANGE: A fast implementation that uses pre-computed block statistics.
ANS: Based on Range Asymmetric Numeral Systems by Jarek Duda (specifically an implementation by Fabian Giesen). Works in a similar fashion to the Range encoder but uses only 1 state (instead of bottom and range) and does encoding in reverse byte order.
FPAQ: A binary arithmetic codec based on FPAQ1 by Matt Mahoney. Uses a simple, adaptive order 0 predictor based on frequencies. Fast and compact code.
CM: A binary arithmetic codec derived from BCM by Ilya Muravyov. Uses context mixing of counters to generate a prediction. Efficient and decently fast.
TPAQ: A binary arithmetic codec based initially on Tangelo 2.4 (itself derived from FPAQ8). Uses context mixing of predictions produced by one layer neural networks. The initial code has been heavily tuned to improve compression ratio and speed. Slowest but usually best compression ratio.

Compression levels:
Ultra7z Optimizer 1.15 (c) 2008-2024
7-Zip Copyright (C) 1999-2024 Igor Pavlov.
http://www.7-zip.org
Use it carefully! Please create backup copy before use it.
Please verify content of each archive.
Run only 1 active instance of the program!

How does it work?
When creating an archive in 7-zip or any other program, you can select only 1 compression algorithm for all files added at a time. Although the program provides several of them. Different algorithms are more effective for different types of files. For example, texts are better compressed using PPMD, but binary files are LZMA, uncompressed audio files (wav) or images (bmp) need a DELTA filter, and so on.

Ultra7z Optimizer repacks such an archive using all possible compression algorithms, trying (sorting) different algorithms for each file type (there is a selection by file extension). At the end, it creates the smallest possible archive size (i.e. it optimizes the original archive, the content does not change!). This is why it is quite a long process (several times longer than simply creating an archive), but it will not affect the speed of unpacking the archive, it will still be very fast (unlike other superarchivers like PAQ, where you have to wait for hours to unpack, here it takes only a few seconds or even less). The compression gain can be up to 10-20% for certain types of files! If the optimized archive is the same size as the original one or larger, the program will leave the original archive unchanged, i.e. you will not lose anything in size in any case.

Thus, the program can also be used as a regular Converter from various types of archives (zip, rar, etc.) to 7z archives.

Download Ultra7z Optimizer 1.15 (5 Mb):
Mirror 3 (File-Upload.org)</noindex>

For daily use, I recommend the “Normal” mode, it is fast enough and gives good results. For better compression, use the “good” or “best” modes. And if you are ready to wait longer, then “ultra”. The “Extreme” and “Extreme2” modes can be selected if the archive size is small enough (up to 10-50 MB), or if you want to get maximum compression despite a fairly long repacking process. If you have more than 4 GB of RAM, you can increase the size of the LZMA dictionary to 256 MB and PPMD to 1024 MB, which can further improve compression. Also, a small improvement usually gives an increase of the parameter “LZMA word Size” to 273.

The main difference between Ultra7z Optimizer and other similar repackaging programs is that it works much faster, because it does not go through all the compression options (and there are more than 400 of them), and tries only the main ones (giving the greatest gain), without chasing hundreds of percent.

Features:
Maximum compression for e-books without quality loss – up to 5-30% (Lossless)! Full compatible with original formats. The document is reduced by repacking the contents with a stronger compression algorithm. It uses 2 programs and selects the best result: ECT (Efficient Compression Tool), AdvanceCOMP. Compression mode: good (faster) or best (slowly). Batch processing of files (drag-n-drop). Program optimizes your file to new one with «_optimized» name ending (source file will remain intact). Output files have their timestamps/permissions set to match those of their inputs. It saves quality of all pictures inside your ebooks. ePub is a free and open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). FictionBook (FB3) is an open XML-based e-book format.

Features:
– Maximum compression for e-book files without quality loss.
– Full compatible with original format.
– Supported formats: Epub, Fb3, Zip, txt.zip, fb2.zip, rtf.zip, fbz, cbz.
– Batch processing of files (drag-n-drop).
– Compression mode: fast (faster), normal, good or best (slowly).
– Compression of graphic files/images inside e-books without loss in quality (Lossless) up to 5-30%!
– Option “Preserve file attributes (time stamps, file access rights, etc.)”.
– You can set «Run in background (without console output)» or uncheck it for manual process control.
– You can set “Low CPU usage (only 2 threads)” or uncheck it for best perfomance.

Used programs:
ECT (Efficient Compression Tool) (c) Felix Hanau – https://github.com/fhanau/Efficient-Compression-Tool
AdvanceCOMP (c) Andrea Mazzoleni – http://www.advancemame.it

Files have the extension .epub. It is designed for reflowable content, meaning that the text display can be optimized for the particular display device. The feature of ePub, especially compared with Word and PDF formats, the content in an ePub book is not pre-formatted as fixed book pages. When a reader device displays the content of an ePub book, it formats the content into pages according to the display size and text font. So when you are reading an ePub book, all you have to do is only flipping the pages. You don’t have to zooming or panning the window to view the page parts out of the displayed area.

EPUB is a straightforward format. An EPUB file (extension: .epub) is simply a ZIP archive that contains what is in effect an entire website, including HTML files, all necessary images, CSS style sheets and other assets, plus additional structure and information (“metadata”) that makes the content able to be reliably consumed from beginning to end by any application or device that’s compatible with the EPUB specifications (“EPUB reading systems” or just “reading systems” for short).

EPUB 3 is the latest version of EPUB. EPUB 3 is based on the latest HTML5 standard, which means EPUB publications can now contain video, audio, and interactivity – just like websites in modern browsers.

An EPUB publication’s content is by default reflowable and most reading systems dynamically paginate that content. Adapting content display to the screens rather than forcing the reader to pan and zoom around pre-formatted content (and, more generally, making content accessible to different modes of consumption) is one of the key characteristics that distinguishes EPUB from PDF, a portable document format designed to represent print-replica content. But EPUB 3 can also, like PDF, represent fixed-layout, pre-paginated content. This can be useful for certain kinds of highly-designed content (illustrated children’s books, digital magazines, etc.) that are designed to be consumed only on a larger-screen device, such as a tablet.

– Manifest – an EPUB publication contains a data structure detailing all of its constituent resources – in effect, a formal and complete “packing list”.
– Defined reading order – an EPUB publication has a “spine” that determines a start-to-end reading order for its top-level content items (though nothing requires that the publication to be consumed in that order).
– Standardized table of contents and related navigational structures, including the ability to define links into content fragments down to the sentence or word level.
– Metadata – publication and item level information about the publication and its components.
– XHTML – the HTML content in an EPUB publication must use the XML-based serialization of HTML5, which makes it directly manipulable by XML tools.
– Media Overlays – Well-defined publication-wide text+audio synchronization (an EPUB publication can be both an eBook and audio book).
– Core Media Types (such as image and audio formats) and minimum CSS features are well-defined, along with a requirement for fallbacks when non-standard content types are used. This enables more reliable processing of EPUB publications, especially when distributed indirectly, than arbitrary websites which may use less standard content types without fallbacks and bleeding-edge CSS constructs that may not be universally supported.

FictionBook is an open XML-based e-book format which originated and gained popularity in Russia. FictionBook files have the .fb3 filename extension. Readers also support ZIP-compressed FictionBook files (.fb3, .fb2.zip or .fbz)

FB3: FictionBook v.3
Open eBook format, epub replacement/addition (depends on how you use it).

The fb3 file is a totally new redesign of fb2 object format.

The main differences between fb2 and fb3 are:
basically, FB3 file object is a zip-archive, where meta-data, images and text are packaged as discrete files;
meta-information is stored in the distinct file, whereas the body of the book and footnotes – into the other;
all the images are being extracted from XML and are actually ordinary files in the archive.

The format is being developed in order to fulfill the growing requirements to the formatting of the books text and the possibilities of its cataloging. The modern condition of the standards and technologies allows, in addition to the basic advancement of the tags set, to conform the format to the compatibility with the most successful and perspective groundworks.

FB3 – format development.
In the new specification, the FictionBook format is a zip-archive in which metadata, images and text are stored as separate files. The requirements for the format of the zip-file and the agreement on its organization are specified in the ECMA-376 standard , which defines Open XML.

A number of improvements related to formatting (discharging, underlining) were made and a new object was added – “block” – which decorates an arbitrary fragment of the book in the form of a quadrangle and is capable of being embedded in text with flow. Added support for numbered and bulleted lists.

FB3 is distributed under a free license and is open source, so all utilities are available to publishers and users: converters, cloud editors, readers. The current format version , reader and editor can be found in the project repository on GitHub.

For reading e-books, you can use the AlReaderX, FBReader, Calibre, Ice Book Reader etc.

CBZ – A comic book archive or comic book reader file (also called sequential image file) is a type of archive file for the purpose of sequential viewing of images, commonly for comic books. The idea was made popular by the CDisplay sequential image viewer, since then, many viewers for different platforms have been created. Comic book archive files mainly consist of a series of image files with specific naming, typically PNG or JPEG files, stored as a single archive file.
